Inspired by the museum’s modern architecture in Kensington, I tried to capture the building’s clean lines, angular roof, and striking glass façade with a vibrant and contemporary twist. The mirrored reflection and playful use of colour, anchored by a glowing red sun giving it a unique, abstract feel that’s both stylish and imaginative.
What makes this piece even more special is the story behind the building itself. Originally constructed in 1962 as the Commonwealth Institute, this Grade II listed structure was a landmark of post-war modernist architecture. Designed by architect Robert Matthew, it was celebrated for its dramatic hyperbolic paraboloid roof, a sweeping, tent-like canopy that remains one of the most distinctive silhouettes in London’s architectural landscape.
In 2016, the building was reborn as the new home of the Design Museum following an ambitious renovation led by John Pawson, one of Britain’s most influential minimalist architects. The building still retains some of its original Brutalist elements!
