Brutalist Utopia: Barbican Art Print
I created this illustration of the Barbican Estate as part of my ongoing exploration of Brutalist London architecture and the idea of utopia in post-war design.
The Barbican has always fascinated me, not just as a building, but as an entire self-contained vision of city life. A place where architecture becomes environment, and where concrete, water, gardens, and walkways are layered into something almost cinematic in scale.
This piece reinterprets the Barbican as a kind of “Brutalist utopia” - structured, elevated, and slightly surreal. I wanted to capture both its precision and its atmosphere: the rhythm of its towers, the quiet repetition of its forms, and the contrast between heavy concrete and open space.
Originally designed in the 1950s by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the Barbican remains one of London’s most iconic examples of Brutalist architecture. It continues to divide opinion, but for me it represents one of the most ambitious architectural experiments in the city.
This artwork is part of my wider London Brutalist series, where I translate real architectural spaces into minimal, considered illustrations.
This piece is perfect for:
- Brutalist architecture lovers
- London art collectors
- Architects and designers
- Minimal interior spaces
- Unique gifts for design enthusiasts
